Who we are
Steno Start is published by Billy Rebecchi. You can contact us at billy.rebecchi@googlemail.com.
What this policy covers
This policy applies to the Steno Start app and to this website.
What the app collects
The app collects nothing. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking SDKs.
Nothing you do in the app is sent to us or to anyone else. The app works on your device and does not need an account.
What is stored on your device
The app stores your learning progress, settings, saved sentences, test history and any imported dictionaries in a local database on your device. That data is not transmitted to us.
If you import a dictionary from a URL, the app makes a direct request to the address you supply. That server will see your IP address and the request, like any web request. The downloaded dictionary is stored locally and is not uploaded anywhere.
Uninstalling the app deletes its local data, unless your phone or computer restores it from a backup. Android and Apple keep their own backups, and those can include app data. To be certain it is gone, use Reset local progress in the app's settings before you uninstall.
Purchases
In-app purchases are handled by Apple's App Store or Google's Play Store. The purchase is between you and the store: we never receive your name, email address or payment details. Apple's and Google's privacy policies apply to those transactions.
We do see that a sale happened. Apple gives us a pseudonymous identifier for the buyer and the details of the transaction. Google gives us the order, the product and the country it was bought in. If we look up an order to investigate a problem, Google's Play Console may show us the buyer's email address. We use it for that and nothing else.
This website
This website is a set of static pages served by GitHub Pages. It sets no analytics or advertising cookies, runs no analytics and contains no advertising. GitHub may process technical data such as your IP address and browser headers to serve the pages and protect the service; GitHub's privacy statement applies to that processing.
The fonts and images are served from this site. There are no third-party fonts, analytics or advertising scripts.
The support page can show a Cloudflare Turnstile check. When it does, Cloudflare processes your IP address and browser signals to tell people from bots. Turnstile runs on the support page only, and only when the check is enabled.
Support messages
If you use the support form, we collect your email address, your message, any screenshot you attach, and any name, app, version, page or device details you choose to give. We use them only to answer your request. With your consent, the message and screenshot are opened as an issue in a private GitHub repository, so GitHub stores and processes them under its own privacy policy.
We keep the issue while it is open, remove your contact details once it is resolved, and delete the issue twelve months after that. You can ask us to delete it sooner by emailing billy.rebecchi@googlemail.com.
If you email us instead, we receive the same information and our email provider processes it under its own privacy policy. We keep support email while the request is open and for up to twelve months afterwards so we can deal with follow-ups.
Children
Steno Start is a learning aid and may be used by older children. The app has no accounts, no social features and no advertising. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children through the app. If a child sends us a support message, we will answer the request and delete it when it is no longer needed.
Your rights
If you are in the UK or EU, you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, and to have it deleted. The app holds nothing for us to export, correct or delete. For a support message, write to billy.rebecchi@googlemail.com and we will deal with it. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new "last updated" date.
